Northern Knowledge Grand Opening – 5-year Anniversary UGCE

On Thursday 20th September, the new Northern Knowledge building at the Kadijk 4 in Groningen was officially opened. Also celebrated during the event was the 5-year anniversary of the University of Groningen Center for Entrepreneurship (UGCE), which is established in the same building.

“Northern Knowledge is the perfect platform for bringing research and businesses together and for bringing to society the innovation which evolves from collaboration” stated Sibrand Poppema, President of the University of Groningen, who carried out the opening proceedings together with the programme board of Northern Knowledge. Accordingly, the content of the programme was filled in by entrepreneurs sharing their views on their experiences and collaborations with Groningen-based knowledge institutes.

With regards to the UGCE he adds: “What used to be an activity on a Sunday morning 10 years ago, trying to make a business out of knowledge, has developed through the UGCE into a powerful tool that offers students all the facilities and support to be or become an entrepreneur and enterprising alongside their studies.”

“The UMCG, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen are involved in a large number of initiatives and collaborations with businesses, governments and social organisations. Northern Knowledge is a showcase for examples of innovation and entrepreneurship evolving from these collaborations, in which the Northern Netherlands distinguishes itself.” As spoken by Annemieke Galema, director of Northern Knowledge, in her welcome speech. And looking ahead: “We will work hard to facilitate new connections and link existing initiatives and networks to one another.”

Aard Groen, Dean of UGCE, emphasises: “The North now has a rich infrastructure to make innovation possible. Look at Innolabs Chemie and Biobased and the Avebe Innovation Center here on the Zernike Campus. At the Kadijk there is something for everyone who is or wants to be enterprising.”
